Dr. James S. C. Chao and Mrs. Ruth Mulan Chu Chao established one of the first charitable foundations in China, the Shanghai Mulan Foundation, which awarded thousands of scholarships to students in the United States and China. Since Mrs. Chao's passing on August 2, 2007, Dr. Chao has devoted his philanthropic giving to memorializing her life and legacy.
